sea circulation
Large-scale horizontal water motion within an ocean. The way energy from the sun, stored in the sea, is transported around the world. The currents explain, for example, why the UK has ice-free ports in winter, while St. Petersburg, at the same latitude as the Shetland Islands, needs ice breakers. Evidence is growing that the world's ocean circulation was very different during the last ice age and has changed several times in the distant past, with dramatic effects on climate. The oceans are vital as storehouses, as they absorb more than half the sun's heat reaching the earth. This heat, which is primarily absorbed near the equator is carried around the world and released elsewhere, creating currents which last up to 1.000 years. As the Earth rotates and the wind acts upon the surface, currents carry warm tropical water to the cooler parts of the world. The strength and direction of the currents are affected by landmasses, bottlenecks through narrow straits, and even the shape of the sea-bed. When the warm water reaches polar regions its heat evaporates into the atmosphere, reducing its temperature and increasing its density. When sea-water freezes it leaves salt behind in the unfrozen water and this cold water sinks into the ocean and begins to flow back to the tropics. Eventually it is heated and begins the cycle all over again. (Source: MGH / WRIGHT)

10 при увеличении
При увеличении - on increasing; as... increases; at... X magnification, at... X (оптическом); with extrapolation of (расширение диапазона)On increasing the applied heat flux, the temperature of the sample increases continuously to a maximum occurring around 2 W/cm2 but is dependent upon applied pressure and temperature. The extent of fibrous crack extension was then measured optically at 50 X magnification.Русско-английский научно-технический словарь переводчика > при увеличении

13 с течением времени
С течением времени - in time, in the course of time; with the passage of time; as time passes, as time goes on, as time progressedIt [melamine] can readily be replaced if damaged or if, in the course of time, it becomes worn. With the passage of time the thickness of the frozen layer continues to increase, albeit at a slower rate because of the growing resistance to heat conduction across the layer. It is anticipated that increasing amounts of sigma phase precipitate occur with the passage of time.As time passes, a skin of frozen paraffin forms atop the liquid. The foregoing, which we shall endeavor to improve as time goes on, appears to call for reciprocity which we shall, of course, greatly appreciate. As time progressed and the thermal boundary layer increased, the usual heat transfer enhancement with increased flow rate was observed.Русско-английский научно-технический словарь переводчика > с течением времени

18 практиковаться
Практиковаться-- The wisdom of studying these effects over a narrow range of growth rates, as has been the practice in most investigations, is thus questioned. (... как это практиковалось в...) Практически - practically, virtually, essentially, really; for all practical purposes; very nearly; physically (не теоретически)Practically all heat from the heated tube is transferred to the subcooled liquid film, increasing its bulk temperature.Notwithstanding this, it appears that the wavelength is virtually independent of the Reynolds number over most of the range. The deviation from 90 degrees is essentially determined by the amount of damping in the system. Thus for the overlay coatings, the coating composition is for all practical purposes independent of substrate composition.Русско-английский научно-технический словарь переводчика > практиковаться
